Classic Shell is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but were later removed. It has a customizable Start menu and Start button for Windows 7 and Windows 8, it adds a toolbar for Windows Explorer and supports a variety of smaller features. Look here for the full list.

Samba – opening windows to a wider world
As the culmination of ten years’ work, the Samba Team has created the first compatible Free Software implementation of Microsoft’s Active Directory protocols. Familiar to all network administrators, the Active Directory protocols are the heart of modern directory service implementations.

OLINUXINO is Open Source software and Open Source Hardware, low cost starting from EUR 24 Linux Industrial grade single board computer with GPIOs capable to operate -25+85C.
People keep comparing OLINUXINO with Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone project, so we would like to state the differences here:
Open Source Directory benchmark
As interns, we recently completed an assignment to benchmark read, write, modify and authentication performance of different Directory servers. This two part blog entry reports on our findings. This first part introduces the directory servers we subjected to our benchmark. The second part contains the benchmark results and conclusions.

Open Compute Project Driving Open-Source Hardware Development
Facebook launched the Open Compute Project in April 2011 with the intention of sharing the designs of the social networking giant’s data center in Prineville, Oregon, as well as custom designs for servers, power supplies and UPS units. Since then, the project has been growing, adding new partners and introducing new technologies designed specifically for use in webscale data centers.

The Open Compute v2 machines were unveiled at the third Open Compute Summit in May. The new OCP v2 servers are double-stuffed machines that can fit two two-socket x86 servers, their power supplies, and fans into a 1.5U Open Computer chassis.
AMD and Intel have contributed motherboard designs used in OCP v1 and v2. The new motherboards stripped out many features found in traditional motherboards to optimize power and reduce costs.
Open source software is key to transferring large amounts of data to us, quickly
But, dig beneath the hood of this story—and the diagram included—and you’ll see another story. One that points to the key role of open source software in making this phenomenal mission work and the results available to so many, so quickly.

Perhaps the most important piece of this high-demand configuration, GlusterFS is an open source, distributed file system capable of scaling to several petabytes (actually, 72 brontobites!) and handling thousands of clients. GlusterFS clusters together storage building blocks over Infiniband RDMA or TCP/IP interconnect, aggregating disk and memory resources and managing data in a single global namespace.
FFmpeg Reaches Version 1.0
The initial release of this open-source multi-media library came in December of 2000, but only now twelve years later has it hit the over-emphasized 1.0 milestone. Michael Niedermayer, the official FFmpeg maintainer since 2004, mentioned on the developers list that he uploaded the 1.0 release. However, he’s not updating the FFmpeg main page until after he’s got “a bit of sleep”, so the official announcement is likely still a couple of hours out.
