AMD acquires SeaMicro to grab share of microserver market
Launched in 2007, SeaMicro quickly gained attention for their ability to combine cheap, low-end processors that could handle Web-centric server workloads. The company worked closely, if not exclusively, with Intel processors in recent years. SeaMicro’s current SM server line uses Intel’s Atom and “Sandy Bridge” processors.

Zemlin praises $25 Linux computer: a Windows license costs more than four Raspberry Pis
The $35 model entered the manufacturing stage last month and finally became available for purchase this week. Demand for the product was so prodigiously high that both of the foundation’s retail partners were unable to keep their websites running in the hours after the official launch. The $25 model is expected to come later this year.

A year late, hundreds of dollars short: Sony Tablet P coming March 4
The tablet has an NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM running Android 3.2, with no reassurances that the tablet will ever be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Each of the tablet’s two 5.5-inch screens has a 1024×480 resolution, and the device has two cameras: 0.3 megapixels on the front, and 5 megapixels on the back. The Tablet P has only 4GB of internal storage, which can be supplemented via its microSD card slot, and gets 7 hours of battery life. Skeptics of the body style aren’t going to be reassured at all by these middling specs.

Fraunhofer IIS Demos Full-HD Voice Over LTE On Android Handsets
At the floor, there will be a live demo using Android phones, as the Full-HD Voice codec AAC-ELD has been integrated. There’s an LTE network being set up at the show specifically for this demo. Unlike in mobile communications, Full-HD Voice is already established in several VoIP, video telephony and conferencing systems. “Every day, millions of users already make Full-HD Voice calls over IP connections,” said Harald Popp, head of the department Multimedia Realtime Systems at Fraunhofer IIS, “With the introduction of LTE, now is the perfect time to introduce Full-HD Voice to mobile communications as well. Our AAC-ELD audio codec is the perfect solution for all upcoming mobile Full-HD Voice services.”

Urban Airship
Urban Airship was launched in May of 2009. Steven Osborn had been tasked with implementing a backend system for push and in-app purchase for a popular gaming company. While developing the solution, he discovered how resource-intensive the project was. He realized that if he could devote the time, energy, and money to create the perfect solution, he could provide a valuable product for other smart phone app developers. Osborn reached out to former colleagues Scott Kveton, Adam Lowry, and Michael Richardson and the seed of the new company was planted.
An Android smartphone has been trying to use port 1237 to contact this outfit. I will open up that port and see what’s going on.
Update 10/17/2012: Quite a few random wifi platforms contact this company using this port with a very short TCP session.
EVE Online Saw $66M In Revenue Last Year, Mulls IPO
The game, a science fictional adventure set in a star cluster dominated by five major civilizations, first launched in 2003, and its subscriber base (currently about 400,000) has grown every year since launch. Revenue has been growing too, at a compound annual growth rate of 53 percent, bringing in total revenue of $300 million over the game’s lifetime. As for profits, CCP would only say that it has “very healthy margins” — a claim backed up by the fact that it has grown to more than 450 employees despite only raising $3 million in seed funding.

Why corporate cloud storage doesn’t add up
As IT continues in a zigzag path of figuring out what to do with this “cloud” stuff, it seems that some companies are getting ahead of themselves. In particular, the concept of outsourcing storage to a cloud provider puzzles me. I can see some benefits in other cloud services (though I still find the trust aspect difficult to reconcile), but full-on cloud storage offerings don’t make sense outside of some rare circumstances.
via Why corporate cloud storage doesn’t add up | Data Center – InfoWorld.
there’s already storage in the data center running the servers. That means there’s already a backup solution in place, and adding local file storage is trivial.
And one more interesting tidbit from the author of the linked to article.
Don’t forget that fast, reliable storage is very cheap these days. You can pick up 24TB of raw storage for less than $7,000, and even though they’re SATA drives, they’ll be more than sufficient for most general business purposes.
I kind of agree. My worry is the reliability of the cloud provider.

Beyond Facebook: The Rise Of Interest-Based Social Networks
Interest-based social networks have a markedly different focus and approach than Facebook. The Pinterest, Thumb and Foodspottings of the world enable users to focus and organize around their interests first, whereas Facebook focuses on a user’s personal relationships. Facebook offers us a social utility to deepen social connectivity with our existing social graphs, while these new interest-based social networks enable users to express their interests in new, engaging ways and offer authentic, high value connectivity with new people we don’t already know. The different approaches of these interest-based services are distinct from Facebook, and they are powering the massive growth and engagement we are seeing in these new services.
