A wireless router that tracks user activity—but for a good reason

The optimal policies for each application are then packaged into periodic firmware updates sent back to routers. People who sign up for the cloud service and contribute data will get the updated policies in automatic updates. Even those who want nothing to do with the cloud service can get the benefits by updating their router whenever they’d like.

China Unicom replaces Cisco devices over security concerns

As the world’s largest maker of networking equipment, Cisco occupies a large market share in China. It accounts for over a 70 percent share of China Telecom’s 163 backbone network and over an 80 percent share of China Unicom’s 169 backbone network.

Huawei and Cisco’s Source Code: Correcting the Record

Unlike the smartphone patent battles, where parties try to protect and grow their market share by suing each other over broad patents where no direct copying is required, let alone even knowledge that a patent exists, this litigation involved allegations by Cisco of direct, verbatim copying of our source code, to say nothing of our command line interface, our help screens, our copyrighted manuals and other elements of our products.

Diameter Signaling Router (DSR), 3GPP DRA

Tekelec’s Diameter Signaling Router centralizes routing, traffic management and load-balancing tasks to create an architecture that enables your IMS and LTE networks to grow incrementally to support increasing service and traffic demands. The Diameter solution provides protocol mediation and interworking functions that allow you to manage 2G/3G-to-LTE and LTE-to-LTE roaming seamlessly.

Project Byzantium

Byzantium is a live Linux distribution that delivers easy-to-use, secure, and robust mesh networking

Unlike most mesh implementations, a Byzantium Mesh requires no specialized equipment that may not be easy to get during an emergency, just an x86 computer with at least one 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless interface.

Hackers reveal critical vulnerabilities in Huawei routers at Defcon

The vulnerabilities — a session hijack, a heap overflow and a stack overflow — were found in the firmware of Huawei AR18 and AR29 series routers and could be exploited to take control of the devices over the Internet, said Felix Lindner, the head of security firm Recurity Labs and one of the two researchers who found the flaws.

According to the Huawei website, the AR series routers are used by enterprises and AR18 in particular is marketed as product intended for small and home offices.

Engineers ponder easier fix to dangerous Internet problem

But the routers do not verify that the route “announcements,” as they are called, are correct. Mistakes in entering the information — or worse yet, a malicious attack — can cause a network to become unavailable.

It can also cause, for example, a company’s Internet traffic to be circuitously routed through another network it does not need to go through, opening the possibility the traffic could be intercepted. The attack is known as “route hijacking,” and can’t be stopped by any security product.

In March 2011, a researcher noticed that traffic destined for Facebook on AT&T’s network strangely went through China for a while. While the requests would normally go directly to Facebook’s network provider, the traffic first went through China Telecom and then to SK Broadband in South Korea before routing to Facebook. Although the incident was characterized as a mistake, it would have been possible for unencrypted Facebook traffic to have been spied on.

Tomato Firmware: Increased Transmit Power Does More Harm Than Good?

I had turned the routers up to 80 mW and the problem was still occurring. Upon some research I found that as the Transmit power levels of the routers increased, so did the radio noise produced by the routers. I decided to turn the routers back down, to a level lower than when I first began to administer the network. After this change, users noticed an immediate improvement in the quality of their wireless connections. Everything was (and still is) running stable. The users are no longer losing Internet connection and are maintaining proper network speeds.

I’m seeing the same thing with the Tomato firmware.  The firmware is nicer than Linksys but I thought increasing the power of this router would increase the range but I suppose it’s more complicated than that.
