Suppose you are installing Ubuntu on a bunch of identical computers, and you already know the answers to certain questions (what country and time zone you’re in, what keyboard you have, how the network should be configured, how you want to partition the hard disk, etc). You can “preseed” the answers to these questions in a very simple configuration file.

If you have a wifi LAN card / USB adapter, then you can use it as an access point so that other machines can connect to the internet via your machine using Wifi. It’s a lot easier to rename the “old” volume group if the old drive is the only one connected to the system.
Using your first FC4 installation CD and with only the old drive installed, boot into rescue mode (boot: linux rescue), but don’t search for or mount the FC installation. At the command prompt, you will probably need to active the lvm like this:
lvm vgscan
lvm lvscan
lvm vgchange -a y
lvm pvscan
lvm lvscan
The last two commands should list your volume group(s) and logical volume(s). Now use vgrename to fix the problem:
lvm vgrename VolGroup00 whatever_you_want_to_call_it
Note that all lvm commands need to be preceded with “lvm” in rescue mode.

If you’ve ever tried to set up a Wi-Fi HotSpot, you may have already discovered that you need more than a broadband Internet connection and wireless router or access point. Off-the-shelf routers and APs don’t provide the “captive portal” function needed to either authenticate users or just let them know who to thank for their free connection. Nor do they usually provide other features such as billing support, bandwidth limiting and user isolation. To obtain hotspot-specific features and capabilities, you must use a device commonly referred to as a hotspot gateway.

My colleagues & I run a popular website and are constantly concerned with scaling and performance. Until last week, we had been running our own DNS servers (BIND) on Amazon EC2 instances.
We use Pingdom to monitor many functions of our servers, including DNS. What we saw was a resonable average resolution time of about 130ms, but frequent outliers higher than 500ms! The thought of a half-second penalty to the load time for first time visitors is not appealing. So we started to dig into the problem.
