A story about Facebook went around twitter last night that provoked quite a reaction in privacy advocates like me: Facebook, it seems, is experimenting with getting people to \u2018snitch\u2019 on any of their friends who don\u2019t use their real names. Take a look at this:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

People in my field have known about this for a long time \u2013 it\u2019s been the cause of a few \u2018high profile\u2019 events such as when Salman Rushdie had his account suspended because they didn\u2019t believe that he was who he said he was \u2013 but few people had taken it very seriously for anyone other than the famous. Everyone knows \u2018fake\u2019 names and \u2018fake\u2019 accounts \u2013 my sister\u2019s dog has a Facebook account \u2013 so few believed that Facebook was going to bother enforcing it, except for obvious trolls and so forth.
