Users &#8220;check-in&#8221; at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or a device-specific application by selecting from a list of venues the application locates nearby.[3] Location is based on GPS hardware in the mobile device or network location provided by the application. Each check-in awards the user points and sometimes &#8220;badges&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>via <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foursquare\">Foursquare &#8211; Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The service was created in 2009 by <a title=\"Dennis Crowley\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dennis_Crowley\">Dennis Crowley<\/a> and <a title=\"Naveen Selvadurai\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naveen_Selvadurai\">Naveen Selvadurai<\/a>. Crowley had previously founded the similar project <a title=\"Dodgeball (service)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dodgeball_%28service%29\">Dodgeball<\/a> as his graduate thesis project in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at <a title=\"New York University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_University\">New York University<\/a>. <a title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google\">Google<\/a> bought Dodgeball in 2005 and shut it down in 2009, replacing it with <a title=\"Google Latitude\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Latitude\">Google Latitude<\/a>.
